Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion of Waste-Activated Sludge by Conductive Materials under High Volatile Fatty Acids-to-Alkalinity Ratios

چکیده

Anaerobic digestion (AD) represents a suitable option for the management of waste-activated sludge (WAS) produced in municipal wastewater treatment plants. Nevertheless, due to its complex characteristics, WAS is often barely degradable under conventional anaerobic processes. The use conductive materials during AD provides promising route enhancing digestion, through effects direct inter-species electron transfer (DIET). present paper aims evaluate addition four different materials—granular activated carbon (GAC), granular iron, and aluminium steel scrap powders—in semi-continuous lab-scale reactors very high volatile fatty acids-to-alkalinity ratios. In particular, metallic was investigated first time compared other materials. without impossible, while powder zero-valent iron shown not improve process satisfactory way. On contrary, both GAC Al allow effective degradation. At stable conditions, methane yields about 230 NmLCH4/gVS 212 are recorded GAC- Al-amended reactors, respectively. These two most sustaining DIET also case unbalanced

Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion of Waste Activated Sludge by Alkaline Solubilization

The performance of an anaerobic digestion fed with waste activated sludge (WAS) pretreated with NaOH was examined. The sludge was periodically collected from a municipal wastewater-treatment plant. The laboratory work was run in four 1-1 semi-continuous anaerobic digestion reactors. Reactor A was fed with untreated WAS at 1% total solids (TS). The other three reactors, B, C and D, were respecti...

Anaerobic digestion of polyelectrolyte flocculated waste activated sludge.

This work examined how adding one of three polyelectrolyte flocculants (T3052: cationic, T2000: non-ionic, and T1052: anionic) affected the anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge. Methane production, floc characteristics (morphology and zeta-potential) and process parameters (soluble chemical oxygen demands (SCODs) and reductive potentials) were monitored along the digestion tests. The digest...

Kinetics of volatile fatty acids and hydrogen production during anaerobic digestion of organic waste material

This short paper describes the changes in VFA and hydrogen production in time, during an anaerobic microbial digestion where the organic waste material was given as a substrate. The experiment showed that the reaction run most efficiently between 6 and 10th hour of the reaction time. This can be an indicator for future experiments on VFA and hydrogen production optimisation.

A review: factors affecting excess sludge anaerobic digestion for volatile fatty acids production.

This paper presents a review of methods that improve the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) from excess sludge during the anaerobic digestion process. These methods are mainly divided into two approaches. The first approach is located in the pre-treatment methods, which change the properties of the substrates, such as thermal pre-treatment, alkaline pre-treatment, microwave pre-treatment ...
